Pascal's wager is not rational - it is a perfect example of the logical fallacy known as a false dichotomy. A decision is presented in such a way that only two choices are shown to be apparent - one is the "right" choice and the other is the "wrong" choice, so the answer is obviously easy. Except that it isn't. What Pascal, and the author, neglect here is the fact that in the context of religion it is not sufficient to simply profess a belief in God to gain absolution and "infinite reward." Each religion by design (with a few minor exceptions like Zoroastrianism) make the additional claim that it is only through belief in *their* God that one may attain the reward offered by the religion (typically heaven, paradise, etc.) So, for example, if the Pentecostal God is the one true God - even the people who have chosen to believe in the Methodist God or Baptist God are still going to be denied the reward of the Pentecostal religion when they die. To say nothing of those who chose to believe in Jehovah or Vishnu or Allah, etc. The number of possible religions is effectively infinite - which counterbalances the "infinite" reward since only the correct choice, with a probility of 1/infinity, will result in attaining that reward, while no other choices will. Therefore, the only logical solution to the correct formulation of Pascal's wager is to choose atheism, because at least that choice requires no initial investment or detriment (ie. time spent wasting one's life partaking in tedious religious rituals or services) while no others do - but all choices are equally unlikely to produce the desired result.

All of this assumes that if there is a God, that it is of the petulant, petty sort that human religions seem overly fond of. If there is a God that sees fit to judge humans on their morality upon their death and dole out punishment or reward accordingly, then the safest bet is to live one's life in the most morally satisfactory way possible (liberal application of Kant's categorical imperative can be very helpful in doing this in a secular framework.) Belief is therefore meaningless, it is action that is all-important.

Hi,

I have recently visited your website and am writing to try and arrange a quick discussion on the information you currently show as I recognize synergies between our respective websites and an opportunity we can both benefit from.

My name is James Stafford and I run the website OilPrice.com, where we focus on finance within the commodity sectors and after having researched your various pages I wanted to make you aware that we welcome companies such as yours to publish (at no cost) our Energy & Commodity Price Charts, Quotes and Data Panels, which cover: Crude Oil, Gold, Silver, Natural Gas, etc...
Please take a look at http://www.oilprice.com/charts.php to see what is available.

We have only recently launched the site which is why you may not have heard of us, but I would like to clarify that the information is very well presented and doesn’t carry adverts or anything else that would impair the quality for your visitors.
Our development team have also looked over your site and believe all the price formats we offer would be a great fit.

Hopefully you’ll get a chance to take a look at what we do and agree that our free data greatly complements your site and would also be of use to your visitors.

I’d also like to mention that we are looking for contributors to submit articles, so if this is of interest to you please do get in touch. Even though we are a fairly new site we have a PR 6 and are getting over 2,000 visitors a day (and this number is growing rapidly.) We are also creating a writers section which will feature prominently on the homepage.

Should you have any questions or would like to discuss anything I’ve mentioned please do get in touch..

Yours sincerely,

James Stafford

We must look at a lot of indicators including the distributions of income and living condtions. We should also cross check these limited statistics with Sec of State Dulles' yardstick of success for example.

The argument is against data fetishism, ie sheltering behind artifice to promote "success". However the premises of neocon Sarko's initiative look phoney, in the same vein as our local neocon Sithanen. That said, growing without a social component is bound to fail. Likewise, empiricism without intuitive capacity is as useless as stats with variables.

No, happiness is measured in terms of "subjective well-being" of the person. One way of doing so is through surveys. For example, the World Values Survey asks people something like, “<em>Taken all together, how happy would you say you are: very happy, quite happy, not very happy, not at all happy?</em>” Another is through the "Day Reconstruction Method", which asks "<em>participants to fill out a diary summarising episodes of the preceding day and to report the intensity of their feelings during each of those episodes</em>". Another is the "Experience Sampling Method" which "<em>requires participants to carry a handheld computer that prompts them several times during the course of the day (or days) to answer a set of questions immediately</em>."
